About Dr. Cecilia Leung

Ceci_edited.jpg

Ceci earned a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree from the University of Hong Kong, majoring in Psychology. During her studies, she interned with Dr. Lau, conducting sleep research, and continued to work as Dr. Lau's research assistant after graduation.

Ceci subsequently obtained a Master of Clinical Psychology degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. After graduation, she joined a social welfare organization, serving individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their parents. Simultaneously, she collaborated with Dr. Raymond Chan and his team to develop evidence-based social and parenting training. The team's group training programs, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – Context-based Social Competence Training for Adolescents with ASD (CBT-CSCA) and Core Autism Parenting Skills (CAPS), have been provided to industry professionals on numerous occasions, and their proven effectiveness has been published in various international journals. Ceci and Dr. Chan also collaborated with Professor Patrick Leung of the Department of Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong to develop local assessment tools for autism spectrum disorders.

Ceci began studying family therapy in 2019 and applies family therapy concepts to her individual psychotherapy services, including adolescents struggling with emotional problems and adults struggling with parent-child and marital relationships.

In 2023, Ceci was invited by Dr. Lee Wai Yung to join the clinical team of the Asian Academy of Family Therapy, where she intervenes in various emotional problems of children and adolescents through family therapy services. The range of cases is wide, including school refusal, anorexia, self-harm, disciplinary difficulties, separation anxiety, violence, and theft. In the process, she has also accumulated a lot of experience in handling marital conflicts.

While working with various families, Ceci discovered that many mothers easily doubt their ability to fulfill their parenting duties and neglect their own needs, leading to low self-esteem, difficulty in establishing effective boundaries with others, and constant setbacks in their parenting journey. Ceci and Sarah developed a self-growth group specifically designed for mothers to address the constraints they face.

Ceci and Sarah have also collaborated with various primary and secondary schools to develop parent education courses based on family relationships. These courses encourage parents to reflect on their own emotions and marital relationships and have been well received by primary and secondary school parents.

Ceci received her Doctor in Psychology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2025. Her dissertation, supervised by Professor Patrick Leung, examined the persistence and discontinuity of three common problem behaviors in children from preschool to late childhood: internalizing problems, externalizing problems, and attention problems. The study found that family conflict was the only indicator associated with the discontinuity of all three symptoms, while self-perception was the only functional outcome associated with all three symptoms.

Ceci is an amateur astrology enthusiast who regularly writes articles on understanding psychological phenomena through astrology.

Ceci welcomes collaborations with all parties, including academic research, development of intervention methods, and promotion of parent health education in schools.
